Sew with us and bring some winter cheer into your week!

    December 1, 2025

Thank you for braving the elements and sewing with us this winter

It’s so tempting to hibernate and hunker down when the days are short and the weather miserable, but we’re so glad so many of you – especially the new sewers who’ve taken the plunge and joined us recently – are resisting this seasonal urge to come and sew with us.

We might be biased but what better way to bring warmth and cheer into these short days and chill evenings than sewing in the company of others.

We love the energy you bring with you when you walk into the The Sewing Shed. With more than 100 of you sewing and creating with us each week, that’s a lot of sewing tips and conversation for us all to feed off. We love it and hope you do too.

“You’ve saved my sanity! The first day I walked in, I was terrified. You instantly you put me at ease, and very quickly taught me the sewing basics – and, as the weeks went by, the not-so-basics.”

    Embracing the sewing journey!

One of the things we love is seeing someone completely new to sewing grow in confidence and master skills week on week. It might not always be easy to see or feel your own progress, but we see it!

We see you growing in confidence and learning not get too frustrated when things go wonky (and they do – for all of us!). We love seeing your eyes focusing, determined to work out how to get back on track yourself.

We recommend pyjama pants for our beginners because it’s a great way to introduce you to core dressmaking skills like how to measure, read a pattern, thread a sewing machine and achieve a shop bought finish. Sewing skills that will stand you in good stead as you progress and tackle more complex patterns and makes, whatever your pace.

It takes time though. You’re using your brain in a new way, there’s all that hand eye co-ordination to master and new equipment to get used to. It takes energy and it can take a little while to find your rhythm.

We really hope though that by the end of your first term, with your fellow sewers and tutor cheering you on, you’ll see how far you’ve come. We can definitely see your progress, enjoyment and confidence grow week on week!

“What can I say! I came to The Sewing Shed knowing nothing, but I’ve learnt so much I could be here all day telling you. I have come miles! And I’ve loved every minute of it.”
