Our Upholstery classes are perfect for you if you want to learn the core upholstery skills needed to give a new lease of life to a footstool, drop in seat, small ottoman or treasured family heirloom.
Our Monday daytime classes welcome beginners and improvers in a small group of only six in a class. This is he class to attend if you have a treasured family heirloom or something simpler.
At our Sunday Workshops, we welcome the simple starter projects as you are limited by the day, but if you wish to attend more than one date you are welcome to bring a more advanced project.
Our small class size guarantees you plenty of expert tuition and support from your tutor Ania or Clare and the other students.
Beginners & Improvers. This course is perfect for people new to upholstery or those wanting to improve their skills who have already learnt the basics.
This course teaches you the basics of modern upholstery including:
Stripping down the chair
Application of foam / webbing
Applying your fabric
More advance skills can be taught to the improvers. This is dictated by the complexity of your piece.
Before you book, we ask that you send us a photo of your proposed upholstery project. This is so that we can check its suitable for the course.
Upholstery can be complicated and sometimes projects are anything but! We just want to make sure that you can complete your upholstery project within the timeframe of the course (or workshop).
Monday weekly classes are perfect for more complicated projects while our Sunday workshop is strictly for beginners and simple upholstery projects.
If in doubt, phone us for a chat to discuss your requirements.
Bring along your first upholstery project!
Your furniture should be in good repair (e.g. the seat of the chair needs reupholstering but no other repairs) and already sanded/painted/waxed if there is any bare wood.
You should be able to carry it up to the first floor of The Sewing Shed (we have limited availability to store projects in between classes so do check before).
Your chosen fabric, a tape measure and a pair of fabric scissors. Face covering (mask) and eye protection ie safety glasses and or a visor if you do not wear glasses.
Upholstery tools including access to pneumatic staple guns
One Janome sewing machine for each student
You can buy upholstery supplies in the class.
Our experienced tutors Ania & Claire run the Upholstery for Beginners classes. Ania teaches the weekly classes and Clare teaches the Sunday Workshops. [Click here to read Ania’s & Clare’s bio]
